Myanmar government removed Aung San Suu Kyi from jail and put her under house arrest

A big decision has come regarding former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The military government of the country has now decided to take him out of jail and keep him under house arrest. This information has been given through government media.

Suu Kyi was in jail for the last five years. He was arrested on 1 February 2021. On the same day, the Myanmar army ousted his elected government and took power, since then he has been in military custody. He is now 80 years old and has been rarely seen in public for so many years.

According to government channel MRTV, the remaining part of Suu Kyi’s sentence will no longer be served in jail but in a house. That means they will now be kept under house arrest at one place instead of jail. The Army Information Department has also confirmed that he has been shifted to house arrest.

However, it has not been clearly stated where they have been kept. Along with this decision, a new picture of Suu Kyi has also been released. In the picture, she is seen sitting on a wooden bench in white clothes. There are two officers sitting in front of him, one of whom is in police uniform, but no information was given as to when and where this photo was taken.

Recently, there was some reduction in Suu Kyi’s sentence. This relaxation was given on the occasion of Buddhist festival Buddha Purnima. During that time, the sentences of many prisoners in the country were reduced, including Suu Kyi. Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison in 2022 in multiple cases.

However, his supporters and human rights organizations had refuted these allegations and said that this was done for political reasons. Later, after reduction in the sentence, his total sentence is now reduced to 18 years. This means that she still has to serve about 13 more years of her sentence, but she will no longer be in jail but as a house arrest prisoner.

Myanmar is currently going through a big crisis. After the 2021 coup, a civil war-like situation has arisen in the country. Many areas are under the control of rebel groups and there is continuous fighting. At such a time, the decision to keep Suu Kyi under house arrest is being seen as a change in the government’s stance. However, what its future impact will be, it is not yet clear.
