Mystery marine drone explodes in Romania’s Constanța port, emergency response activated
Romanian authorities activated the Red Intervention Plan after an unidentified marine drone exploded inside the Port of Constantatriggering a major security response and prompting officials to restrict access to the affected area.
According to emergency authorities, the drone exploded at approximately 10:30 a.m. local timeseveral hours after it was first discovered near the port at around 5:50 a.m. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident, although multiple agencies were placed on alert as a precaution.
The explosion occurred within the premises of the Romanian Agency for Human Life Saving at Sea (ARSVOM)where the drone had been located after being intercepted by protective barriers in the water.
Red intervention plan activated
Following the discovery of the device, Romanian authorities activated the Red Intervention Planone of the country’s highest emergency response protocols. The move resulted in the deployment of emergency personnel, security teams, and specialized units to the port area.
Access to the affected zone was restricted while authorities assessed the potential threat posed by the device. Emergency officials established a security perimeter around the site and coordinated with maritime and security agencies to monitor the situation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the origin of the drone or how it entered Romanian waters.
Drone reportedly exploded on its own
According to Bogdan Tomaspokesperson for Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations (DSU)the marine drone exploded on its own while authorities were responding to the incident.
Officials stated that no one was injured in the blast. Emergency teams had already secured the area before the explosion occurred, helping prevent casualties.
The incident nevertheless triggered a significant response due to concerns over the nature of the device and the potential risks associated with an unexploded maritime drone inside one of Romania’s most important ports.
Device discovered near anti-pollution barriers
Authorities said the drone was stopped by anti-pollution barriers installed in the port waters. The device reportedly became trapped near the protective system before being identified by personnel.
Initial descriptions indicated that the drone was green in color and equipped with antennas. Images and details released so far have not clarified whether the device was armed, remotely controlled, or intended for surveillance purposes.
Investigators are expected to conduct a detailed forensic examination of the remains to determine its origin and capabilities.
Strategic importance of Constanta port
The Port of Constanta is Romania’s largest seaport and one of the most strategically important maritime hubs on the Black Sea. The facility handles significant commercial traffic and plays a vital role in regional shipping and logistics operations.
Any security incident involving an unidentified maritime device is likely to receive heightened attention because of the port’s importance to regional trade and security.
Officials have not indicated whether the incident has affected port operations.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the drone entered the area and what caused the explosion. Security agencies, maritime authorities, and emergency response teams are expected to examine debris recovered from the site.
For now, officials have confirmed only that the device exploded after being discovered and that no injuries were reported. The restricted area remains under monitoring as investigators continue their work.
Further information is expected to be released once authorities complete an initial assessment of the incident and identify the source of the marine drone.
