Nagpur BJP’s tension, years of loyalty and ticket cut at the last moment – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: Nagpur is considered a strong fort of BJP. Be it the headquarters of the Sangh or the dominance of big leaders, the party’s hold here has always been deep. But, this time before the upcoming Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, the story seems to be changing a bit. The latest development is that ‘our own people’ within the party have raised the alarm of rebellion.
It is often said that a ‘ticket’ in politics is not just a piece of paper, but a reward for years of hard work. When the party released its list, many senior leaders were surprised who were hopeful that they would get the chance this time. But when the name was found missing, the anger turned into tears and then rebellion. As a result, many influential leaders have now broken ties with the party and filed nomination as independent candidates.
Anger of workers and impact on elections
Political experts believe that these small rebel faces can prove to be a big headache for BJP. The problem is not just about losing one seat, but about ‘deducting votes’. These grassroots leaders have their own significant vote bank in Nagpur politics. If these leaders remain independent, then the opposition (Congress or other parties) can directly benefit from it.
Why did the leaders get angry?
These rebel candidates say that they worked day and night for years for the party, but when the time came to get results, preference was given to parachute candidates or new faces. The situation in many wards of Nagpur is such that old BJP workers are now standing face to face. Some leaders even said that ‘the party high command has hurt their self-respect.’
Big challenge in Fadnavis’ stronghold
Nagpur election being the home town of Devendra Fadnavis is a battle of prestige for BJP. In such a situation, this kind of tussle in its own house puts a question mark on the image of the party. However, the big leaders of the party are trying to do damage control and the process of convincing the angry people is going on, but will they be considered as ‘rebels’ till the last moment of withdrawal of nomination? It is difficult to say right now.
At present, the discussion on the streets of Nagpur is whether BJP will be able to control this infighting, or will the resentment of its own people become a thorn in the path of power. The game of electoral equations is now at an exciting turn.
