Complete preparations were made for filming this scene and as a safety measure, a tire was tied on Nana Patekar’s stomach so that the knife could not harm him.
But a small mistake during the shooting proved costly. When Shafiq Syed threw the knife as per the scene, it actually passed the tire and hit Nana Patekar in the stomach. Due to this, bleeding started from his stomach but the surprising thing was that Nana Patekar did not stop the scene midway and continued acting. The people present on the set felt that all this was a part of his excellent acting and they started praising him.
After some time, when the situation became clear, everyone realized that this was not an act but a real accident. After this he was immediately treated. This incident shows Nana Patekar’s professionalism and dedication towards his work.
Talking about the film, this film, made with a budget of around Rs 20 lakhs, earned around Rs 45 lakhs and proved to be successful at the box office. Even today its IMDb rating remains around 7.9 which shows its quality.
Talking about awards, Salaam Bombay! Won three National Awards in 1989. Shafiq Syed received the National Award for Best Child Artist while Mira Nair was awarded for Best Regional Film. Apart from this, the film also received the National Award for Best Feature Film.
This film established another big record. It became the second Indian film after Mother India to be nominated for the Oscar Awards.
