Narendra Modi ji, by running bulldozers at Manikarnika Ghat, you have destroyed centuries-old religious, cultural and spiritual heritage: Kharge
New Delhi. Congress President Mallikarjun Khagre has made a big attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, Narendra Modi ji, in the name of vulgar beautification and commercialization, you have destroyed centuries-old religious, cultural and spiritual heritage by running bulldozers at Manikarnika Ghat in Banaras. You want to erase every trace of history and just stick your name plate on it. First, small and big temples and shrines were demolished in the name of the corridor and now it is the turn of the ancient ghats.

He further said, you have committed the crime of demolishing the rare ancient heritage of Manikarnika Ghat, mentioned in the Gupta period, which was renovated by Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar ji, in the name of renovation. Kashi, the oldest city in the world, is a confluence of spirituality, culture, education and history which attracts the entire world.
Is the intention behind all this again to benefit business friends? You have handed over water, forests, mountains, everything to them, now the turn of cultural heritage has come. The people of the country have two questions for you – could renovation, cleaning and beautification be done even after preserving the heritage? The whole country remembers how your government kept the statues of great personalities of India including Mahatma Gandhi, Baba Saheb Ambedkar in a corner of the Parliament complex without any consultation.
The Congress President further said, the sacrifices of our freedom fighters were erased from history from the walls of Jallianwala Bagh Memorial in the name of this renovation. Why were hundreds of years old statues, which were bulldozed at Manikarnika Ghat, razed to the ground with an axe? They could have been preserved in a museum? You had claimed – “Mother Ganga has called” Today you have forgotten Mother Ganga. The Ghats of Banaras are the identity of Banaras. Do you want to remove these ghats from public access? Every year lakhs of people come to Kashi at the last stage of their life to attain salvation. Do you intend to betray these devotees?
