NASA astronaut Sunita Williams retires, was part of 3 missions and spent 608 days in space
Astronaut Sunita Williams Retires : American space agency NASA’s famous astronaut Sunita Williams has retired from the space agency. The experienced astronaut of Indian origin took this decision after an illustrious career of 27 years, in which she completed three missions on the International Space Station and made many records for human spaceflight.

60 year old Williams is currently on India tour. On Tuesday afternoon, he participated in an interactive session held at the American Center in New Delhi. The poster for the event – “Eyes on the stars, feet on the ground” – described him as ‘NASA Astronaut, Retired and US Navy Captain, Retired’. During the conversation, she shared her experiences of the time when she was stuck in space.
The eight-day mission to the International Space Station turned out to be the biggest challenge of Sunita Williams’s life as her Boeing spaceflight ran into problems, extending her stay in orbit to more than nine months. Sunita returned to Earth in March 2025 after a nine-month mission, which was extended due to technical problems with Boeing’s Starliner capsule.
According to media reports, Williams’ last mission began in June 2024 and was initially planned for a week, but due to a malfunction in the Starliner, it lasted more than nine months. He and his crew member, Butch Wilmore, eventually returned from the SpaceX capsule.
