Nathan Fillion confirms reboot with fan-favorite cast
Actor Nathan Fillion has revealed that an animated revival of the cult science-fiction series Firefly is currently in development.
The announcement came during a panel at the Awesome Con in Washington, DC where Fillion appeared for a live taping of the podcast Once We Were Spacemen alongside several of his former co-stars.
According to the actor many of the original cast members are expected to return to voice their characters in the animated project.
Actor Adam Baldwin who portrayed Jayne Cobb in the original series is also expected to lend his voice.
The animated reboot is being developed by Fillion’s production company Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation which holds the rights to the franchise.
Writers Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters have been attached as showrunners and a script for the project has already been completed.
However original Firefly creator Joss Whedon is not involved in the new animated series.
The proposed show will reportedly take place between the timeline of the original 2002 television series and the 2005 film continuation Serenity expanding the story while remaining consistent with the franchise’s existing lore.
Early concept art for the project has been created with the animation studio ShadowMachine.
“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant,” Fillion said during the event.
“Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.”
The original series created by Whedon aired for just one season in 2002 but later developed a devoted fan following through DVD releases streaming and the film Serenity.
