National Maritime Heritage Complex: NMHC will bring 4500 years old Harappan maritime heritage to the world with modern technology

As part of the media study tour organized by Press Information Office, Raipur, a delegation of journalists from Chhattisgarh reached Lothal on Tuesday and visited the National Maritime Heritage Complex. During this, information was taken about the concept of the complex, the museum under construction, theme based galleries and proposed facilities.

National Maritime Heritage Complex is a huge heritage complex being developed on 400 acres.

Amit Rathod, General Manager, National Maritime Heritage Museum, Lothal, said that the National Maritime Heritage Complex will not be just a museum, but a comprehensive heritage center presenting India’s maritime journey in an experiential form from ancient times to the modern era.

In this complex being developed in an area of ​​about 400 acres, reconstruction of the Harappan city along with a museum, pavilions of coastal states, jetties, waterways, theme parks, attractions related to maritime and naval heritage and residential facilities for tourists are being developed.

India’s sea voyage will be seen in 14 galleries

14 thematic galleries are being developed in the museum complex to showcase different eras of India’s maritime heritage.

In these, many important aspects including maritime trade of Harappan civilization, maritime relations of ancient India, Greco-Roman contacts, arrival of European powers, maritime tradition of Gujarat, Maratha naval power, development of Indian Navy and Coast Guard will be displayed (National Maritime Heritage Complex).

Apart from this, climate change, traditional shipbuilding, navigation technology, Indian shipping after independence and a special gallery for children will also be the center of attraction.

4500 years old lifestyle will be seen in Harappan city National Maritime Heritage Complex

A life size Harappan city is being recreated in the complex to reflect the lifestyle of ancient Lothal. Ancient roads, residences, markets and drainage systems will be displayed in this city, which is being developed in an area of ​​about 80×80 meters.

Its objective is to give tourists a direct experience of the well-organized city life that is about 4500 years old. A market inspired by the style of that period will also be developed in the proposed Lothal Town.

Jetty and waterways will provide a unique experience

Jetties and waterways will also be major attractions in the National Maritime Heritage Complex. According to the proposed arrangement, tourists will be able to reach different parts of the complex (National Maritime Heritage Complex) through waterways. Apart from this, sound and light show is also proposed at the museum and lighthouse, which will further improve the tourist experience.

Lighthouse museum and 5-D theater will be attractions

Attractions like Lighthouse Museum, 5-D Dome Theater and ‘Lothal Nee-Vav’ will be developed in the upcoming phases of the project. Along with this, eco-resort, museum, cafe and other facilities based on marine theme will also be prepared.

Heritage of coastal states will get a platform

Coastal pavilions are being developed in the complex to showcase the maritime and cultural traditions of various coastal states including Gujarat and Maharashtra (National Maritime Heritage Complex). Apart from this, facilities like Maritime and Naval Park, Monuments Theme Park, Climate Change Theme Park and Adventure and Entertainment Park are also included in the plan.

International cooperation plan with 35 countries

Amit Rathore said that international cooperation has been planned with 35 countries to present India’s maritime heritage at the global level. MoUs have been signed with many countries including Portugal, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Thailand, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Oman and Israel (National Maritime Heritage Complex).

Lothal will become a big tourist center

There are plans to develop the entire Lothal area as a tourism hub along with the National Maritime Heritage Complex. For this, the Gujarat government has constituted Lothal Area Development Authority (LADA).

Under the project, it is planned to develop an eco-tourism circuit connecting Ahmedabad, Thol Bird Sanctuary, Nalsarovar Wetland, Lothal and Blackbuck National Park.

Will realize the concept of development as well as heritage

Amit Rathore said that the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) is an effort to link India’s ancient maritime achievements with modern technology, tourism and education in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Development, Heritage too”.

He said that once fully developed, this complex can establish Lothal as a major maritime and heritage center (National Maritime Heritage Complex) on the global tourism map. The project will also create new opportunities in the fields of cultural tourism, education, research and employment.
