What is National Overseas Scholarship Scheme?
National Overseas Scholarship is one of the major schemes of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Its objective is to provide assistance to students who come from economically and socially weaker backgrounds and wish to study abroad.
This scholarship is given only for Masters and PhD level studies. Through this, students get a chance to study in the best universities of the world, so that both their career and future can be strengthened.
Who can apply?
Only selected sections get the opportunity to apply under this scheme. This includes families of Scheduled Castes (SC), Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, landless agricultural laborers and traditional artisans.
Applicant must have at least 60% marks, age should not be more than 35 years and annual family income should be less than Rs 8 lakh. Also, it is mandatory to have admission or offer letter from a recognized foreign university.
How much scholarship and what benefits are available?
A total of 125 scholarships are given every year, in which most of the seats are reserved for SC students. Apart from this, some seats are earmarked for other deprived sections and women, to ensure equal opportunities.
This scholarship covers full tuition fees, accommodation expenses, visa, medical insurance, contingency grant and air travel. It completely reduces the financial burden and helps students to concentrate on their studies.
