“The government is taking this step to address national security risks related to ByteDance Limited’s operations in Canada through TikTok Technology Canada Inc,” Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said in a statement. “This decision is based on information, evidence and advice from Canada's security, intelligence community and other government partners collected during the review,” Champagne said.

What is the whole matter?
Ottawa last year began a review of TikTok's plans to invest and expand its business in Canada. ByteDance is the Chinese parent company of TikTok. Under Canadian law, the government can review potential risks to national security from foreign investment. The law prevents the government from making public details of such investments.
On this, TikTok said that it will challenge this order in court. “Closing TikTok’s offices in Canada and eliminating hundreds of good-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s interest,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “Today’s shutdown order will do just that.”

In fact, the TikTok app is banned on government devices in Canada. The move was taken citing an unacceptable level of threat to privacy and security. TikTok and ByteDance had filed a lawsuit in a US federal court to block a law signed by President Joe Biden in May. The law, signed on April 24, gives ByteDance until January 19 to sell TikTok or face a ban.
