National Sports Award 2025: Four including Manu Bhakar-Gukesh received Khel Ratna, President Draupadi Murmu gave sports awards

New Delhi. Four players, including India's female shooter Manu Bhaker, who won two Olympic medals in the Paris Olympics, and World Chess Championship winner Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh have been awarded the Khel Ratna. The Sports Awards 2024 were announced by the Sports Ministry in the early week of January and President Murmu honored the award winners at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Apart from Manu and Gukesh, Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and Paralympian Praveen Kumar were also given the Khel Ratna Award.

Manu-Harmanpreet impressed in Olympics, Gukesh in World Championship

Manu, 22, became the first player from independent India to win two medals in the same Olympics when she won bronze medals in the 10m air pistol individual and mixed team events at the Paris Olympics in August. In the Paris Olympics itself, under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Singh, India won the bronze medal for the second consecutive Olympics. 18-year-old Gukesh became the youngest world champion and was also instrumental in the Indian team's historic gold medal in the Chess Olympiad last year. Para high jumper Praveen won the gold medal in the T64 category in the Paris Paralympics. This is a category of players who do not have one or both legs below the knee and are dependent on an artificial leg for running.

34 players received Arjuna Awardand

Apart from the Khel Ratna, 34 players were honored with the Arjuna Award for their outstanding performance in sports in 2024, out of which athlete Sucha Singh and para swimmer Murlikant Rajaram Petkar were honored with the Arjuna Award Lifetime Award. Five people received the Dronacharya Award for outstanding coaching, including badminton coach S Muralidharan and football coach Armando Agnello Colaco in the lifetime category.
