National Volleyball: Railways won the men’s title, Kerala’s superiority in the women’s category remains intact.

Varanasi, 11 January. The Indian Railways team earned the distinction of becoming the overall winner in the men’s category of the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship held at the Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra on Sunday. Whereas in the women’s category, defending champion Kerala maintained its undoubted superiority and won the title for the sixth consecutive time.

Kerala could not compete with Railways in men’s final

The most interesting aspect of this eight-day event, which reached the pinnacle of excitement with the cooperation of Varanasi Municipal Corporation, was that the teams of Railways and Kerala were face to face in the finals of both the categories. On the last day, in the final of the men’s category, Railway Smashers defeated Kerala’s challenge in a one-sided fashion and won the title by winning 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) in straight sets.

Teams of Punjab and Rajasthan have right on bronze medal

Punjab and Rajasthan teams dominated in hard line matches. In the men’s category, Punjab won the bronze medal by defeating defending runners-up Services 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18). In the women’s category, Rajasthan won the bronze medal with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-12, 20-25, 25-14) victory over Haryana.

Chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister of the state Keshav Prasad Maurya, President and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Volleyball Association Brajesh Pathak and Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari presented trophies and medals to the winning teams. Organizing Committee Chairman and Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari welcomed the guests while Secretary Sarvesh Pandey gave the vote of thanks.

The winning teams of both the categories will get equal amount of Rs 2.5-2.5 lakh.

The women’s and men’s teams that won the championship were given equal cash amount of Rs 2.51-2.51 lakh. The runner-up teams were given a prize of Rs 1.50 lakh each and the third place team was given a prize of Rs 1 lakh each. Apart from this, shields, medals and certificates were given to the players. Players selected in the categories of Best Attacker, Best Blocker, Best Setter, Best Universal, Best Libero and Most Valuable Player in men and women category were awarded a cash amount of Rs 11,000 each.
