Sultan Jahan was born on July 9, 1858 to Nawab Begum Sultan Shahjahan and her husband Baqi Muhammad Khan Bahadur. Before becoming famous as Sultan Jahan, his name was Sarkar Amman. Being the only surviving child of the Nawab of Bhopal, Sultan Jahan was declared heir apparent to the Bhopal Musnad in 1868 after the accession to the throne of her grandmother, Sikandar Begum, and her mother. After the death of her mother in 1901, Sultan Jahan ascended the throne and became Nawab Begum of Dar-ul-Iqbal-e-Bhopal, ruling for 30 years.

Nawab Begum implemented several structural reforms in the army, law enforcement, taxation, judiciary and the structure of state prisons. Nawab Begum imposed liquor prohibition in the state.
In his efforts to reform the Indian state with European style, he founded the Yacht Club. A project that many believe she would have completed if she had lived longer. He died in 1930 and left behind a legacy of timeless reforms. This created a solid foundation for future generations.
