More than 10,000 Naxalites laid down their arms

Naxalite surrender: Over 10,000 Naxalites lay down their arms

Development work taking place in Naxalite areas, Naxalite incidents also reduced

New Delhi. Due to pressure from security forces and rehabilitation schemes, more than 10,000 Maoists have surrendered their arms in the last decade. In the year 2025, 2,300 Maoists laid down arms and in the first three months of 2026, more than 630 Naxalites chose to return to the mainstream instead of armed insurgency. These figures relate to Maoist surrenders from 2014 to early 2026.

In this regard, an official said that the government has adopted an integrated, multi-pronged and decisive strategy against Naxalism, which replaced the fragmented approach of the previous governments. An example of this is the construction of roads in the Red Corridor. This Red Corridor once extended from Pashupati to Tirupati through Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Contractors used to refuse to work in this Red Corridor in the past.

Development work done in Naxalite areas
The Center entrusted the Border Roads Organization (BRO) with the task of constructing roads in areas under the influence of People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), which includes construction of five major roads and six important bridges in these strongholds of Naxalism. Officials said more than 15,000 kilometers of roads were constructed in CPI (Maoist)-influenced areas, of which 12,250 kilometers were completed in the last 10 years alone.

He said that in the year 2014, there were only 66 police stations in these areas whereas in the last 10 years, 586 police stations were constructed. Officials said these police stations were built in areas where Maoists had a strong influence and were once considered the most serious internal security challenge.

Decrease in Naxalite incidents
Apart from this, 361 new security camps were established in the last year and 68 such helipads where helicopters can land even at night have been built to strengthen the operation. As a result, while Naxalite incidents were recorded in 330 police stations in 76 districts in 2013, they have reduced to only 52 police stations in 22 districts by June 2025.

Benefits of government schemes reached Naxalites
According to officials, in areas where governance was weak and Maoists had established their dominance, the benefits of government schemes started reaching the common people. The number of houses sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana increased from 92,847 in March 2024 to 2,54,045 in October 2025. Aadhaar registrations also increased from 23.50 lakh to 24.85 lakh in the same period and 21.44 lakh Ayushman cards were issued compared to 19.77 lakh. The government has invested heavily in education and infrastructure with the aim of eliminating the socio-economic causes of Maoism. According to officials, more than 250 Eklavya schools were approved in the last 10 years, of which 179 are operational, along with 11 Kendriya schools and six Navodaya schools.
