NCERT will prepare AI based curriculum and books for intermediate, AI education will be implemented for class three from the academic session 2026-27.

New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has taken a big step towards making school education future-proof. In the first phase, a special text book development team has been formed to prepare curriculum and text books based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for classes 11th and 12th.

The Education Ministry gave this information in the Parliament. The ministry said that this initiative is part of the broader plan to include AI in school education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Education Ministry clarified that this curriculum and books related to AI for classes 11th and 12th are being developed in line with the National Curriculum Framework – School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. Its objective is to prepare students for new technologies and make them eligible for future jobs.

AI project included in class 6 course

The government also said that another important step has been taken in this direction. NCERT has included a project based on animations and games in the Class 6 Vocational Education book, in which the use of AI tools has been added. This will help students to develop technology based thinking at an early stage itself.

AI education will start from class 3 from 2026-27

The Central Government has reiterated that AI and computational thinking are the main pillars of future education. According to the government, AI education will be implemented in all schools from Class 3 onwards from the 2026-27 academic session. This decision is completely in line with the reforms of NEP 2020.

CBSE prepared AI draft curriculum

Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared a draft curriculum based on AI and Computational Thinking for students of classes 3 to 12. According to official sources, basic understanding of AI will be given in the initial classes. AI and computational thinking will be taught as compulsory subjects in classes 9 and 10.

SOAR program will provide AI skilling

To take AI education to the grassroots level, the government has also launched a national program called Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR). This initiative is linked to NEP 2020, National AI Skilling Framework and the vision of Developed India 2047.

To increase awareness about AI among students of class 6 to 12.

Strengthening teachers’ AI literacy.

Reducing the digital divide and providing equal opportunities in all sectors.

Students will get micro-credentials

Under the SOAR program, students will be trained in four phases linked to the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). It will consist of three micro-credentials for students of classes 6 to 12:

Each module will be of 15 hours and in total students will get 45 hours of AI learning. The government believes that these initiatives will make school education more inclusive, technology-enabled and future-ready.
