The Maharashtra government has introduced the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) scheme to streamline concessional travel for senior citizens and other eligible groups. The initiative, implemented through the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), aims to digitise ticketing and make public transport more efficient and transparent.
With this move, the state is taking a major step toward cashless and seamless travel across its extensive bus network.
Mandatory for Availing Travel Concessions
Under the new system, senior citizens will need to carry the NCMC smart card to avail travel concessions on MSRTC buses. The scheme also covers students, women, persons with disabilities, and other beneficiaries of subsidised travel.
Earlier, passengers could avail discounts using identity proofs like Aadhaar cards. However, the new system replaces manual verification with a digital process, ensuring accurate tracking of benefits.
Key Benefits for Senior Citizens
The NCMC card is expected to significantly improve convenience for elderly passengers. It eliminates the need to carry multiple documents and enables quick, contactless ticketing.
Senior citizens in Maharashtra currently receive major travel benefits, including:
- 50% concession for those aged 65–75
- Free travel for those above 75 years
By linking these benefits digitally, the government aims to ensure that subsidies reach the right beneficiaries without delays or discrepancies.

The NCMC card comes with several user-friendly features designed to simplify travel:
- Cost of around ₹199 (including GST)
- Minimum balance requirement of ₹100
- Recharge options via mobile apps, websites, and authorised agents
- Aadhaar-linked verification for senior citizens
Additionally, the state has deployed over 3,000 authorised agents to help with registration, especially assisting senior citizens and rural passengers.
