Nearly 59,000 IELTS exams saw scores raised worldwide after technical error

More than 63,000 computer-based IELTS tests worldwide have had their results adjusted after a technical error affected scores recorded between Aug. 24, 2023 and Sept. 4, 2025, according to IELTS.

The organization said nearly 59,000 exams, about 93%, had at least one skill score increase, while the rest saw reductions. After re-marking, two-thirds of test-takers kept the same overall band score, while about 20,600 gained 0.5 band, two candidates increased by 1.0, and a small number dropped by 0.5.

Around 62,800 candidates were affected, including some who took the test multiple times, less than 1% of total global IELTS test-takers, the report noted.

IELTS confirmed this was an internal technical issue unrelated to cyberattacks.

Earlier, on Nov. 12, many candidates in Vietnam received emails from the British Council and IDP, which administer IELTS tests in Vietnam, announcing score changes in Listening and Reading. Those impacted may request a full refund (over VND4.6 million or US$175) or retake the exam for free, with confirmation required before May 2026.

IELTS said it can provide letters or documentation for students applying to universities, employers or immigration agencies. Still, several test-takers shared that their previous scores had already disrupted study plans, making the later score increase less helpful. Some universities have begun reviewing admissions granted via IELTS scores but have not released conclusions.

IELTS is one of the world’s most recognized English proficiency tests, scoring Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking on a 9-band scale.

In Vietnam, IELTS results are widely used for university admissions, graduation requirements, and study-abroad or immigration applications. Students scoring 4.0 or higher may be exempt from the English section of the national high school exam.
