New Delhi: Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has joined several top Indian javelin athletes in alleging abuse and harassment against coach Naval Singh, prompting a formal complaint to the Sports Authority of India (SAI).
The complaint, reportedly submitted on April 10, also includes Paralympic champion Sumit Antil along with other elite athletes, raising serious concerns about conduct within India’s javelin training ecosystem.
Allegations of abuse and misconduct
According to the complaint, athletes have accused coach Naval Singh of using abusive language directed not only at them but also at their families. The athletes claim the behaviour crossed professional boundaries and created a hostile training environment.
Neeraj Chopra, in his statement cited in the complaint, said such conduct was “disgraceful” and unacceptable from someone in a position of authority. He stressed that sports must uphold dignity, discipline, and respect.
He further urged SAI to take immediate and strict action to ensure accountability and protect athletes from similar behaviour in the future.
Sumit Antil raises concerns
Sumit Antil also supported the complaint, alleging that the coach frequently sent abusive audio recordings, particularly during competition periods. He claimed that the behaviour worsened when events approached.
Antil said he had previously raised the issue with authorities but felt compelled to escalate it after continued incidents. He also indicated that several other athletes had faced similar treatment but had not spoken publicly.
Complaint submitted to SAI
The athletes are understood to have escalated the matter to the Sports Authority of India and the Paralympic Committee of India. Discussions were also held with officials from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to address the issue.
The complaint seeks disciplinary action and stricter oversight to prevent such incidents in the future.
