One of India’s most important entrance examinations is being conducted today under extraordinary security arrangements. More than 22 lakh students are appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 re-examination, which will determine admissions to undergraduate medical and dental courses across the country. The National Testing Agency (NTA), along with central and state authorities, has deployed an unprecedented security network to ensure the integrity of the examination.
The high-stakes re-exam comes amid heightened scrutiny of the examination system and efforts to restore confidence among students and parents.
More Than 22 Lakh Students Appear Across 5,440 Centres
According to official information, over 22 lakh candidates are taking the examination at 5,440 centres spread across 551 cities in India and 14 international locations. The examination is being conducted from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, while eligible candidates with disabilities are being provided additional compensatory time.
The scale of the examination makes it one of the largest entrance tests conducted anywhere in the world.
Massive Security Operation Across India
To prevent malpractice and ensure transparency, authorities have rolled out a multi-layered security framework. The arrangements include extensive police deployment, intelligence monitoring, AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, biometric verification, and strict frisking procedures at examination centres.
Reports indicate that more than one lakh CCTV cameras have been installed for monitoring, while thousands of security personnel have been deployed nationwide to oversee the examination process.
Several states have also implemented special security protocols around examination centres, including traffic management plans and enhanced police presence.
Advanced Monitoring to Prevent Cheating
The NTA and government agencies have taken extraordinary precautions following concerns surrounding examination integrity. Electronic surveillance systems, jammers, command centres, and real-time monitoring mechanisms are being used to detect suspicious activity and prevent organised cheating attempts.
Authorities have repeatedly warned students against falling victim to fake claims related to question papers, answer keys, or guaranteed admissions. The NTA has also launched verified communication channels to provide authentic updates directly to candidates.
Education Minister Appeals for Calm
Ahead of the examination, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged students to remain calm and trust the examination system. He expressed confidence in the NTA, state governments, district administrations, and the country’s education infrastructure to conduct the examination fairly.
The NTA has similarly encouraged students to focus on their preparation and avoid unnecessary anxiety.

For lakhs of aspiring doctors, the NEET examination represents the gateway to medical education in India. Performance in the examination determines admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, veterinary, and several allied healthcare programmes offered by institutions across the country.
