Nepal’s most expensive movement! ‘Gen Z’ protest report released, loss of Rs 85 billion; death of many people

Nepal Gen Z Movement: The real picture of the ‘Gen Z Movement’ that broke out in Nepal in September has now come out with official figures. The high level committee constituted by the government has presented its detailed report during the cabinet meeting held at Singhdarbar in which it was told that this two-day agitation has caused a huge economic loss of 84.45 billion Nepali rupees to the country. The violence resulted in 77 deaths and over 2,429 injuries, including a large number of youth.

According to reports, the agitation peaked on 8 and 9 September, during which 57 people lost their lives in just two days, while 20 more died in the following days. Of the injured, 17 were children under the age of 13 and 1,433 of the injured were aged between 13 and 28, indicating significant participation of youth in this movement.

Violence in all seven provinces

The committee said the impact of the violence was felt in all seven provinces of Nepal. 54 out of 77 districts of the country were hit by violence, while 262 local units faced some form of damage or the other. Government and public structures were hardest hit, with a total of 2,168 institutions affected.

The report said 2,671 buildings were damaged, including government offices, schools, health centers and local administrative buildings. The cost of damage to buildings alone has been estimated at Rs 39.31 billion. Additionally, 12,659 vehicles were damaged, causing a loss of Rs 12.93 billion.

Big impact on economic activities too

In the breakdown of damage, the loss of government and public sector has been said to be Rs 44.93 billion, that of private sector at Rs 33.54 billion and that of community sector at Rs 5.97 billion. The committee also clarified that the damage was not limited to physical infrastructure only, but the disruption of services also had a major impact on the economic activities of the country.

The committee also presented a detailed blueprint of reconstruction in the cabinet meeting. 36.30 billion Nepali rupees are estimated to be required to reconstruct damaged government and public structures. This committee was constituted on 21 September 2025 and it prepared its report within 75 days and submitted it to the government.

Big lesson for Nepal

After the arrival of the report, Prime Minister Sushila Karki has emphasized on rapidly starting reconstruction work in the affected areas and strengthening the security infrastructure. There was also a change of government after the Gen Z movement, in which KP Sharma Oli’s government was ousted from power. This movement has proved to be a big lesson for Nepal not only at the political but also at the social level.
