Nepal government will not challenge the High Court's decision to acquit Sandeep Lamichhane in rape case.

Kathmandu, 8 October (Hindustan Reporter). The government will not challenge the High Court's decision acquitting former Nepalese cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane in a rape case in the Supreme Court.

Nepal's Attorney General's spokesperson Suryaraj Dahal told the media on Tuesday that there is no justification to challenge the High Court's decision in the Supreme Court in Sandeep Lamichhane's case. The victim girl had already written a letter to the government lawyer requesting him not to approach the Supreme Court in this matter.

A girl had filed a complaint against Sandeep Lamichhane accusing him of rape, saying that she was a minor. After this Lamichhane was arrested. The district court had sentenced Lamichhane to eight years' imprisonment and ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the victim girl. Lamichhane had appealed in the High Court against the decision of the district court.

Patan High Court, while overturning the decision of Kathmandu District Court, had termed the rape allegations against Sandeep as false. The High Court had termed the claim of the victim girl being a minor as false and had said that consensual physical relations cannot be categorized as rape. In its decision, the High Court has asked the victim girl to bargain for money and file a complaint if the money is not received.
