77 deaths accounted for! 24 hours after oath, Balen Shah sent Oli to jail, prepared to give 15 years sentence
Nepal Politics: Balen Shah, who became the new Prime Minister of Nepal, has shown a tough stance as soon as he assumed office. Within just 24 hours of taking oath, he took major action and got former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak arrested. Both the leaders have been accused of negligence during the Gen-Ji movement.
KP Oli has described this action as motivated by political vendetta and has said that he will challenge it in the court. In the investigation report, Oli and the writer have been found guilty under several sections. Balen Shah is considered a leader associated with the Zen-Ji movement, and strict steps have now been taken in the case related to this movement. If found guilty in this case, Oli may face imprisonment of up to 15 years.
Negligence in violence during the movement
In fact, a commission was formed under the chairmanship of Gauri Bahadur Karki to investigate the violence that took place during the Gen-Ji movement. In the report of this commission, the role of Oli and the author in the case of death of protesters on September 8 was described as careless and irresponsible. Action was recommended against both of them under the Indian Criminal Code Act, 2074 (2017).
77 people died
The commission also held the former police chief responsible for ordering the use of force against the protesters. 77 people died in the violence that broke out during the Gen-ji movement, while there was also massive damage to property. According to a report, property worth about 85 billion Nepali rupees was destroyed during this movement.
