Nepal’s Kailash Mansarovar Yatra obstructed! Balen government wrote protest note to India on script
Kathmandu, 3 May. The ruling Balendra Shah ‘Balen’ government in Nepal has sent a diplomatic letter i.e. Diplomatic Protest Note to India and China, creating hurdles in the conduct of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Lipulekh Pass. In this letter, Nepal has expressed its objection to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Lipulekh, saying that this area is a part of its land and no activity is acceptable on it.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lipulekh is not acceptable
Nepal’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lokbahadur Paudel Kshetri has made it clear that he has strong objection to the plan to conduct Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Lipulekh. Nepal says that this is its land and no activity should take place there without their consent.
Entire Nepal united on this issue – Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal
On this issue, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said that this decision is not of any one leader, but this ‘Protest Note’ has been sent only after talking to all the political parties of Nepal. That means the whole of Nepal is talking in one voice on this issue.
However, this objection of Nepal is not new, rather its roots are hidden in the ‘Sugauli Treaty’ of 1816. The Government of Nepal claims that according to this treaty, the entire area of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani lying east of the Mahakali river is a part of Nepal. Nepal is completely adamant that these places are an integral part of its map.
The letter contains warnings and old claims.
In the press release issued by Nepal, it is clearly written that they have conveyed their stand to both India and China through diplomatic channels. The Balen government of Nepal says that they have already told the Indian government many times that nothing like building roads, doing business or pilgrimage should be done in this area. But as the matter progressed, Nepal has now lodged a formal protest.
Nepal has often been staking its claim regarding Lipulekh and Kalapani.
If seen, this dispute is quite old. Nepal has often been staking its claim regarding Lipulekh and Kalapani. But this time the style of the Balen government is a bit different because it has taken India as well as China into its fold. Nepal believes that both the big countries should understand the sensitivity related to this region.
It is understood that when the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will start in the coming days, what will be the turn of this ‘Protest Note’ of Nepal. At present, Nepal has increased the tension between Delhi and Beijing by citing its land. It will be interesting to see how India and China respond to this diplomatic letter.
Nepal’s PM Oli expressed objection regarding script in his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping
Former PM Oli had also expressed objection on India-China trade through script.
It should be remembered that former Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli, during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last year, had expressed objection to resuming trade between India and China through Lipulekh. After the meeting of Oli and Xi Jinping during their participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin in August last year, a press release issued by Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said that during the meeting, Oli raised objection to the recent agreement between India and China on resuming trade from Lipulekh.
