Netflix expands Money Heist universe with new tease

Madrid: Fans of Money Heist have reason to celebrate as Netflix officially confirmed that the world of the globally successful Spanish franchise is set to continue.

The streaming platform recently dropped a mysterious teaser video announcing that “the revolution isn’t over yet,” sparking massive excitement among fans worldwide. However, Netflix has not yet clarified whether the announcement refers to a sixth season of Money Heist, a brand-new spin-off, or another instalment connected to the franchise universe.

The announcement comes just days before the release of Berlin Season 2, which premieres on May 15.

Netflix teases next chapter of the franchise

Netflix surprised fans by releasing a one-minute promotional teaser on YouTube hinting at the future of the Money Heist universe.

The video opens with the message: “It all began with money and then became gold and priceless treasures.”

It further states that the story is far from over and hints that the next chapter has already begun.

The teaser did not reveal any footage from an upcoming project but instead focused on reminding viewers about the franchise’s biggest heists and memorable moments.

In the description accompanying the video, Netflix stated that some stories begin with a perfect strike, but Money Heist transformed into something much bigger.

The platform also highlighted how the franchise evolved from a robbery involving cash to large-scale heists involving gold and national treasures.

The announcement immediately triggered speculation online, with fans debating whether Álex Pina is planning to revive the original storyline or expand the universe through additional character-focused spin-offs.

Is Money Heist returning for season six?

Despite the major announcement, Netflix has not confirmed a sixth season for Money Heist.

The original series officially concluded in 2021 after its fifth season. The finale wrapped up the story of Álvaro Morte’s iconic character The Professor and his team after the Bank of Spain heist.

However, the teaser’s wording has led many fans to believe that the franchise may not be done with the original timeline just yet.

Others speculate that Netflix could continue exploring prequel stories involving popular characters from the series.

The ambiguity surrounding the announcement has only increased fan curiosity across social media platforms.

Berlin season 2 to release on May 15

The upcoming second season of Berlin will continue the story of Andrés de Fonollosa, popularly known as Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso.

Berlin serves as a prequel spin-off to Money Heist and explores the character’s life before the events of the original series.

In the new season, Berlin’s gang reportedly shifts its operations from Paris to Spain for another ambitious heist involving the Duke of Málaga.

Several returning cast members include Michelle Jenner as Keila, Tristán Ulloa as Damián, as well as Begoña Vargas, Julio Peña Fernández and Joel Sánchez reprising their roles.

The upcoming season also introduces new cast additions including Inma Cuesta, José Luis García-Pérez and Marta Nieto.

Money Heist remains a global phenomenon

Money Heist first premiered in 2017 on Spanish television network Antena 3 before Netflix acquired international streaming rights later the same year.

What initially began as a local Spanish crime drama soon transformed into one of Netflix’s biggest international successes.

The franchise introduced audiences to memorable characters such as The Professor, Tokyo, Berlin, Nairobi and Rio, while popularising the iconic red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks worldwide.

Over the years, Money Heist became a pop culture phenomenon, earning a massive global fanbase and inspiring merchandise, events and fan communities across countries.

With Netflix now teasing another expansion of the universe, fans are eagerly waiting to discover what surprise the franchise creators have planned next.
