Netflix OTT platform under investigation in India, allegations of visa violation, tax evasion and racial discrimination

The Indian government is investigating allegations of visa violations, tax evasion and racial discrimination against OTT platform Netflix India.

Netflix News: American streaming company Netflix's troubles are going to increase. In fact, Reuters has cited a government email to say that the Indian government is investigating allegations of visa violations, tax evasion and racial discrimination against OTT platform Netflix India. This email was sent to former Netflix executive Nandini Mehta.

According to a Reuters report, the email was written by Deepak Yadav, an official at the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRO), on July 20. “This is regarding concerns about visa and tax violations related to Netflix’s business practices in India,” the email reads.

We are aware of the company's conduct, visa violations, illegal structures, tax evasion and other irregularities including racial discrimination. Details including incidents of discrimination have been received.”

A Netflix spokesman told Reuters the company was not aware of the Indian government's investigation. Deepak Yadav declined to comment. The Foreign Regional Registration Office and India's Home Ministry did not respond to Reuters' questions.

Mehta left the company in 2020. In 2021, Mehta filed a lawsuit against the company in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging wrongful termination and racial and gender discrimination. The company has denied the allegations in court.

It is noteworthy that Netflix has around 10 million i.e. 1 crore users in India.
