New Air Ticket Refund Rules: air travel Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given a very comforting news for the passengers. The DGCA has now announced stricter rules for airlines, making major changes to the ticket cancellation rules. According to the new rules, ticket If canceled within 48 hours of booking, passengers will not be charged any additional charges. This will save passengers from a huge financial burden.
What exactly is the new rule?
As per the new rules implemented by the DGCA, passengers will now be able to avail the facility of ‘Look-in Period’. Passengers will be able to cancel or change their tickets free of charge within 48 hours of booking. However, if the passenger wants to change the date of travel on the same ticket, the difference of the normal fare for the new flight will have to be paid. Additionally, airlines cannot charge any fee for correcting an error in a passenger’s name within 24 hours of booking a ticket. However, this facility will be applicable only for tickets purchased from the official website of the airlines. This facility is applicable only for flights booked 7 days in advance for domestic travel and 15 days for international travel. These rules will not apply when the travel date is very short.

Refund Procedure and Liability of Travel Agent
Often, passengers face difficulties in getting refunds if they book tickets through travel agents or online portals. While resolving this, the DGCA has clarified that the full responsibility of the refund will be on the airline concerned, as the agents are their authorized representatives.
- Schedule: All refund processing must be completed within 14 working days.
- Payment Mode: Refund is mandatory within 7 days if paid by credit card and immediate if paid by cash.
- Medical Emergencies: A full refund or a ‘credit shell’ (amount that can be used for onward travel) should be arranged in case of medical emergency.
Transparency and Grievance Redressal
Airlines must clearly inform passengers about cancellation charges at the time of booking. This step has been taken due to the increasing flow of passenger complaints to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Airlines have been ordered to clearly display refund policies on their websites. Travel associations have welcomed the move, hoping it will make air travel more reliable and customer-friendly.
