New chapter in India-Bangladesh relations: From Ganga water agreement to fuel supply, why is Dhaka Foreign Minister’s visit to Delhi special? – ..
News India Live, Digital Desk: Diplomatic activities have intensified to deepen the roots of friendship between India and Bangladesh. The upcoming visit of Bangladesh Foreign Minister to India is not just a courtesy call but is going to prove to be a turning point in the geopolitics of South Asia. While the renewal of the historic Ganga Water Treaty of 1996 is at the center of this tour, major agreements are also expected regarding energy security and economic corridor.
Future of Ganga Water Treaty and shared water management
The most sensitive and important issue of this high-profile tour is the renewal of the ‘Ganga Water Sharing Treaty’. This 30-year treaty, signed in 1996, is scheduled to expire in 2026. Dhaka wants a concrete consensus to be reached on its expansion in time, so that availability of water for agriculture and irrigation can be ensured. Apart from this, big proposals can also be placed on the negotiating table regarding water management of Teesta River and other 54 shared rivers.
Energy corridor and uninterrupted supply of fuel
There is also a possibility of a one-to-one discussion this time regarding ‘energy connectivity’ between India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh is expecting steady supply of refined oil and electricity from India for its growing energy needs. An important consensus can be reached between the two countries regarding the review of supply through the Maitri Pipeline and future cooperation in the LNG sector. This will not only be a lifeline for Bangladesh’s industries but will also ensure a huge market for India.
Emphasis on border security and ease of doing business
According to diplomatic sources, border management and ‘zero casualty’ policy will also be discussed in the meeting. Both countries appear committed to removing trade barriers and accelerating connectivity projects (such as rail and road links). This visit of the External Affairs Minister is a clear indication that amidst global instability, India is ready to take relations with its most trusted neighbor to a new high level.
