New data centers will run on human brain cells
Australian biotech company Cortical Labs is developing biological data centers powered by human brain cells. These facilities, to be built in Melbourne and Singapore, will use CL1 organic computer units, which can provide efficient computing at very low power.
Biological Data Center Technology: Australian biotech company Cortical Labs has taken the initiative to develop a data center powered by human brain cells. The company has launched the first biological data center in Melbourne and plans to develop a similar facility in Singapore. CL1 biological computer units will be used in these centres, which will work with the help of neurons developed from stem cells. The purpose of this technology is to reduce energy consumption and create more efficient data processing options amid increasing AI computing needs.
Data centers will run on brain cells
Under the new technology, organic computer units will be used instead of traditional servers and processors. For this, the company has developed a special unit named CL1, which operates from human brain cells i.e. neurons.
Computing work will be done by installing these units in the data center. The first biological data center being built in Melbourne is planned to install about 120 CL1 units, while the data center to be built in Singapore can install about 1000 units in a phased manner.
How does this unique technology work?
The neurons used in these biological computers are developed from stem cells. They are then placed on a special microchip, which sends electrical signals to these cells and records their response.
Software communicates with these cells through this process and reads their responses as computing output. In this way, scientists are working towards using the natural processing capability of the human brain for data processing and computing.
More efficient computing with less power
Due to the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence around the world, new data centers are being built rapidly. This has also increased concerns about heavy electricity consumption and its impact on the environment. In such a situation, the search for energy efficient computing systems has intensified.
According to the company, the CL1 unit uses very little energy. Its power usage can be less than that of a simple handheld calculator. This is why this technology is being seen as the energy-efficient data center of the future.
