New Delhi Railway Project: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved three major projects of the Ministry of Railways worth approximately Rs 18,509 crore. These projects include the construction of third and fourth railway lines between Kasara-Manmad (Maharashtra), Delhi-Ambala (Delhi and Haryana) and Ballari-Hosapeth (Karnataka). The government said on Saturday that these projects will increase the capacity of the railways. Traffic flow will improve significantly. This will increase the efficiency and service reliability of Indian Railways. These multi-tracking projects will ease operations and reduce congestion, are in line with the Prime Minister’s ‘New India’ vision and will contribute to the self-reliance of the people of the region by increasing employment and self-employment opportunities.

Help increase transportation efficiency
These projects, framed under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan, will help enhance connectivity and transport efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultation. The initiative will ensure uninterrupted movement of people, goods and services, spread over 12 districts of Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and Karnataka, these projects will extend the existing railway network by approximately 389 km, the proposed multi-tracking projects will improve connectivity to approximately 3,902 villages with a population of approximately 9.7 lakh. Additionally, these projects will improve rail connectivity to major tourist destinations across the country. These include Bhavli Dam, Ghatandevi, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Katra (Mata Vaishno Devi), Srinagar, Hampi, Ballari Fort, Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Tungabhadra Dam, Kenchanguddha and Vijay Vitthal Temple.

Railways is an environmentally friendly and energy efficient mode of transport. These projects will help achieve climate change goals, reduce transport costs in the country, save 220 million liters of oil imports and reduce 1.11 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to planting 4 crore trees.

Approval of India’s first tunnel under Brahmaputra
The Union Cabinet has approved construction of the Var Padri Greenfield Corridor between Gohpur and Numaligarh, which includes India’s first road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra in Assam. 18.662 crores has been approved by the government for this project.
