India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri discussed in detail further strengthening of energy cooperation in his meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright. In this conversation, both the countries emphasized on increasing partnership in new areas like nuclear energy, coal gasification (technology of converting solid coal into gas through chemical process) and LPG export.
New Delhi: In an important step towards further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and the United States, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a high-level meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright. In this meeting, expansion of energy security, trade and technical cooperation between the two countries was discussed in detail.
This meeting has taken place at a time when the global energy market is going through a period of instability and new strategies are being made regarding energy supply chains at the international level.
Focus on energy security and business expansion
The following areas were mainly discussed in the meeting:
- nuclear energy cooperation
- coal gasification technology
- LPG export and supply
- enhancing bilateral energy trade
- Strengthening the energy security framework
According to the Indian Embassy, both sides agreed to enhance long-term cooperation in the energy sector and share new technologies.
Big step on nuclear energy cooperation
Cooperation in the civil nuclear energy sector was seen as a major theme in the meeting. Recently, after the new law passed by India, the doors have opened for private participation in this sector, which has increased the possibilities of international partnership. After this change, India’s nuclear energy sector is expected to get more investment and technical support.
There was also a special discussion on coal gasification technology in the meeting. This technology uses solid coal to generate energy by converting it into gas through a chemical process. Both countries described this technology as important in terms of energy efficiency and environmental balance.
US Partnership and Cooperation Proposal
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore said that the US is ready to increase cooperation with India in areas like civil nuclear energy, coal gasification and LPG supply. He said that the energy partnership between the two countries will strengthen in the coming years and can play an important role in global energy stability.
During this visit, Vikram Misri also met several senior officials including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Topics like trade, defense and technical cooperation were also discussed in these meetings. Apart from this, discussions were also held with senior officials of the US Defense Department regarding India’s military partnership.
The American side described defense cooperation with India as continuously growing. Advanced defense equipment, technical coordination and joint security strategies were also discussed in the discussion. Both countries recognized that the India-US defense partnership has become extremely important in view of the current global security challenges.
