New Feature: 4G services will now be available even without signal

Delhi Delhi. In an important step to increase mobile connectivity, the Government of India has launched Inter-Circle Roaming (ICR) facility. This revolutionary step allows users of networks like BSNL, Jio, Airtel and Vi to access 4G services through any available network, even if their primary provider's signal is unavailable.

The facility is part of the government's broader initiative to ensure seamless connectivity across India, addressing long-standing network issues, especially in rural and remote areas.

What is inter-circle roaming?

Inter-circle roaming is a state-of-the-art feature designed to enable telecom service providers (TSPs) to share network infrastructure. The feature, launched during the inauguration of mobile towers funded by the Digital India Fund (DBN), allows users to benefit from government-funded towers regardless of their network operator.

Previously, DBN towers were dedicated only to the telecommunications provider responsible for their installation, limiting their access to users of other networks. With the introduction of ICR, this restriction has been removed, allowing multiple service providers to share the infrastructure. Result? Users can now enjoy seamless 4G connectivity, overcoming the challenges of weak or no signal coverage from their primary network.

Why is this initiative important?

The inter-circle roaming facility addresses key issues that have hindered India's progress towards digital inclusivity:

Limited network coverage in rural areas:

Rural areas often experience signal outages due to inadequate infrastructure or limited network expansion by private operators.

This initiative ensures that users even in the most remote villages can access high-speed internet, allowing them to connect with the rest of the world.

Optimization of infrastructure:

The project reduces the need for redundant infrastructure, encouraging providers to share resources and improving efficiency.

By pooling resources, the telecom sector can focus on enhancing overall service quality rather than duplicating efforts.

Increase in digital reach:

With over 27,000 towers financed by the Digital India Fund, the government has ensured that 4G connectivity reaches 35,400 villages, many of which were previously cut off from reliable internet access.

Impact on rural and urban connectivity

The inter-circle roaming initiative is expected to have a far-reaching impact, especially in rural areas where connectivity has always been a challenge. For example:

Educational Opportunities: Students in remote areas can now access online learning platforms and educational resources, thereby bridging the digital divide.

Health services: Telemedicine and online consultations may become more accessible, allowing patients to connect with doctors without visiting a doctor.
