New Florian Wirtz contract at Bayer Leverkusen could include release clause

Germany star Florian Wirtz surprisingly looks set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season, despite interest from the top clubs across Europe. He is in advanced talks over a new deal with die Werkself until 2028.

The Daily Briefing reveal that despite reports that the deal was done, Wirtz is yet to put pen to paper, which naturally adds a degree of uncertainty. However he does look set to extend with Leverkusen.

That in part is because it does not look as if interested parties Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid will be willing to pay the €130-150m asking price. However Christian Falk does note that there are discussions ongoing to include a release clause in his new deal, albeit nothing concrete has been agreed to.

If a clause is included, it would certainly facilitate a move to a top club if Wirtz did decide to leave Leverkusen. Real Madrid have a long-standing interest in Wirtz, and local media have noted that they see him as a potential long-term successor to Luka Modric in their midfield.
