New initiative of Central Government: Great news for women!

New Delhi. The central government is preparing to implement the Women’s Reservation Law in the country, which can historically increase the participation of women in Indian politics. According to media reports, this time there is a plan to implement the law on the basis of 2011 census.

Women’s Reservation Act 2023 and its need

Under this law passed in the year 2023, a provision for 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies was made. However, the condition for its implementation was attached to the new census and delimitation, due to which it has not become effective yet. Now the government is working towards revising this condition and implementing the law as soon as possible.

Women’s representation will increase in Lok Sabha

According to the report, if women’s reservation is implemented, Lok Sabha seats will increase from the current 543 to 816. Of these, about 273 seats will be reserved for women. This step will give women real power in political representation and strengthen their role in Parliament.

Amendment to the Constitution is necessary

To implement women’s reservation before delimitation, amendment will have to be made under Article 368 of the Constitution. For this, two-thirds majority will be required in both the houses of the Parliament. Under this process, the government will also have to garner support from opposition parties.

political consensus

However, the government alone does not have sufficient numerical strength in Parliament. BJP has 240 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 103 in the Rajya Sabha. Therefore, support of opposition parties will be necessary to implement women’s reservation. According to the report, the government is already trying to garner support by contacting opposition leaders on this issue.

next steps

Officials say that after getting the approval of the Cabinet, this bill can be introduced in the Rajya Sabha first next week. This decision will not only increase women’s participation in Parliament, but will also pave the way for making women’s presence permanent and effective in Indian politics.
