New MG Plug-in Hybrid SUV Patented: Next-Gen Hyundai Creta Rival
JSW MG Motor India has big plans for the Indian market. After JSW partnered with MG, they announced that they would be launching a new product every three to six months. Since then, things have been improving for MG in the Indian market, and products like the MG Windsor EV are examples of the same. As part of its future plans, MG also intends to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles to India, and it looks like the brand is planning to bring more than one PHEV to the country. MG recently registered a patent for an upcoming 5-seater SUV. From the images that are available, it looks like the upcoming MG SUV is going to be a rebadged version of the Baojun Yunhai, which is an SUV available as both an EV and a PHEV.
Baojun Yunhai
The Baojun Yunhai is actually a compact crossover or SUV that was launched in the Chinese market in 2024. The SUV is available as both a plug-in hybrid and an EV. The patent filed in India is for the PHEV version. How do we know that? The PHEV version has fuel filler caps on both sides.
Design

The exterior design of the upcoming Baojun SUV is clearly visible in the official documents. The Baojun Yunhai gets a very futuristic-looking design language. It features a triangular-shaped cluster with LED DRLs and headlamps integrated into it. It does remind us of some modern-day Porsches from certain angles.
As we move down, we notice a large trapezoidal air dam with gloss black elements around it. The bumper looks muscular and premium at the same time. The side profile of the SUV resembles the Porsche Macan and Porsche Cayenne SUVs. The SUV gets regular door handles, and we also see a decent amount of chrome or brushed aluminium inserts around the window area. At the rear, the SUV gets an integrated spoiler with sleek-looking LED tail lamps connected by an LED bar.

In terms of dimensions, the Baojun Yunhai PHEV is 4,590 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,608 mm tall. It offers a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. Dimensionally, it is bigger than the Hyundai Creta and smaller than the Tata Harrier.
Interior
Like most Chinese cars, the Baojun Yunhai offers a premium-looking cabin. It comes with a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The SUV also gets an 8.8-inch driver display, and the gear selector is positioned behind the steering wheel, similar to many Mercedes-Benz models. The centre console offers storage spaces and a wireless phone charger.

The interior in the international version looks premium, as it is finished in light colours. We expect the SUV to come with leatherette upholstery, electric seat adjustments with ventilation, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and more.
Powertrain
As mentioned above, the Yunhai is available as both an EV and a PHEV. The PHEV version of the Baojun Yunhai is powered by a 1.5-litre NA petrol engine that generates 105 PS. It is paired with a 201 PS electric motor. The combined power and torque figures are not yet known.

The PHEV is available with two battery pack options: a 9.5 kWh battery pack that offers a driving range of 60 km and a 20.5 kWh battery pack that offers a 140 km range.
Coming to India?
While we have not received official confirmation from JSW MG Motor India, we feel this could be one of the models from the brand that may help democratise PHEVs in the segment. Like most MG models the Baojun Yunhai will get a different name when it gets launched in India. The Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV is expected to be launched against rivals like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, while the Baojun Yunhai will rival models such as the Hyundai Creta hybrid, Kia Seltos, and Tata Harrier in the Indian market.
