New rules of Oscar 2027, is the big door open for Indian films to win now?
New Delhi .Major changes have come to the fore for the 2027 edition of the Academy Awards, the world’s most prestigious film honor, which have sparked a new discussion in the global film industry. The impact of these rules announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will not be limited to Hollywood only, but will also create new opportunities for many emerging film markets including India.
The change that is being discussed the most is related to the use of Artificial Intelligence in films. Now if AI has been used in any film, be it script writing, visual effects, voice cloning or face replacement, then it will be mandatory to give complete information about it. This step has been taken so that the role of human creativity in film production remains clear and technology is used with transparency. Although AI has not been completely banned, accountability has been fixed for its use.
Another significant change was seen in the acting categories. Now an actor or actress can get nominations for more than one film in the same category, provided their performances are among the top votes. This change may prove beneficial for actors who play multiple impactful roles in a single year. This will strengthen the competition and provide a platform to diverse talents.
The changes made in the International Feature Film category have special significance for Indian cinema. Earlier only one film from each country could be sent in this category, but now the rules have been relaxed. If a film wins awards at major international film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival or Venice Film Festival, it may also be eligible for this category. This simply means that now opportunities can open up for more than one film from one country.
Keeping in mind the digital age, the rules related to release have also been changed. Now films having limited theatrical release as well as release on streaming platforms will also be recognized provided they meet other necessary conditions. This change has brought relief to films that prefer the digital medium over traditional theatrical releases.
Apart from this, new guidelines have also been issued to increase transparency in music and technical categories, making the evaluation process more clear and fair.
Looking at all these changes, it can be said that Oscar 2027 is not just a change in the rules, but a reflection of the changing nature of global cinema. Especially countries like India, where diverse and rich stories are made, now have more opportunities than ever before to strengthen their identity on the international stage.
