New Zealand, who came to bat first after losing the toss, had a good start and the team scored 391 runs in the first innings. Middle-order batsman Glenn Phillips played an excellent inning of 100 runs and put the team in a strong position. Apart from them, Tom Blundell added 51, Daryl Mitchell added 44 and Kyle Jamieson added 41 runs. Jacob Bethel took maximum three wickets for England.

In reply, England’s first innings was reduced to 291 runs. Emilio scored 53 runs and Matthew Fisher scored 50 not out, while captain Joe Root could score only 46 runs. For New Zealand, Matt Henry took five wickets in the first innings and gave the team a significant lead of 100 runs.
