The New Zealand Women’s Cricket Team became the latest entrants in the illustrious list of ICC T20 World Cup winners with their resounding win over South Africa on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium in the 2024 iteration of the showpiece.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has brought about women’s cricket to the forefront. With many female cricketing stars being uncovered on the biggest stage, the T20 showpiece event continues to be a growing spectacle.

2009 – England Women – Host: England
The inaugural winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The England Women’s team led by Charlotte Edwards managed to be crowned the first Women’s T20 World Champions in what was a low-scoring affair by beating New Zealand. The White Ferns led by Aimee Watkins set a minute target of 86 runs after they were bundled out thanks to Katherin Sciver-Brunt’s economical quota of four overs where she picked up three wickets while giving away just six runs. The chase ended up being a breeze thanks to the measured knocks by Sarah Taylor and Claire Taylor to get the win.
2010 – Australia Women – Host: West Indies
Once again New Zealand found themselves in the final but now they are up against the mighty Aussies who managed to outdo their neighbouring rivals to make it two heartbreaking defeats in a row. With a target of just 107 runs, Sophie Devine’s all-round show of two wickets and an unbeaten knock of 38 proved to be futile as Australia’s Elysse Perry was the star of the show with her three wickets while giving away just 18 runs in her four overs to give the Aussies their maiden Women’s T20 title.
2012 – Australia Women – Host: Sri Lanka
The Australian dominance continued as they managed to get the better of their Ashes rival, England in the final that took place in Colombo. Thanks to some fine starts from the opening pair of Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy coupled with Jess Duffin’s 45, the Aussies set a massive score of 142 runs in the first innings. England on the other hand were outdone by the sheer quality of the Australian bowling attack with Jess Jonassen being the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for just 25 runs in her quota of four overs to give the Australian side their second World T20 title.
2014 – Australia Women – Host: Bangladesh
The previous year’s finalists, Australia and England once again came face-to-face, this time in Mirpur, Bangladesh. But the outcome was the same as the Aussies got the better of their English rivals to get their third title in a row. Thanks to Sarah Coyte’s standout bowling performance with figures of 3/16, she kept the English batters quiet and set a low total of 106 runs which the Australian Women’s unit chased down with ease thanks to the brilliance of the skipper Meg Lanning at 3 alongside Ellyse Perry at 4. Both scored 44 and 31 respectively to secure the win by 6 wickets and 29 balls to spare.
2016 – West Indies Women – Host: India
It took a herculean effort to end the Australian dominance. But the West Indies managed to break the streak by taking down the mighty Australian side to win their first T20 World title. Hayley Matthews produced a performance for the ages by picking up one wicket and helping chase down 149 runs by scoring 66 runs in 45 balls to help complete the chase with three balls to spare. The skipper Stefanie Taylor also had a massive role at the top of the order as she scored 59 runs to help the Women in Maroon reach the summit.
2018 – Australia Women – Host: West Indies
The Ashes rivals came face-to-face for the third time. But still, the pattern followed with the Australian unit getting the better of their English rivals. England’s batting unit disappointed barring the likes of Dani Wyatt and Heather Knight. Australian spin-bowling all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner stole the show with the ball with figures of 3/22 and also chipping in with the bat with a handy cameo of 33 runs in 26 balls to give the Aussies the win by 8 wickets and 29 balls to spare.
2020 – Australia Women – Host: Australia
The 2020 final that took place in Melbourne marked India’s first appearance in the finals. However, their campaign came to a heartbreaking end at the hands of the Aussies with both Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney striking 75 and 78 respectively to give a mammoth score of 185 runs as the target. The batting was an even bigger disappointment as Indian batters bundled out for just 99 runs with Megan Schutt picking up a four-wicket haul to give the Aussies their fifth World T20 title by beating India by 85 runs.
2023 – Australia Women – Host: South Africa
The Australian dominance continued in 2023 with the hosts South Africa making their way to the final. Beth Mooney gave the Aussies a fine contribution of 74 runs to help set a target of 157 runs. But the South African side despite putting up a strong fight were unable to get past the finish line as Laura Wolvaardt’s knock of 61 a the top of the order proved to be futile as Australia won their sixth World T20 title by beating South Africa by 19 runs.
2024 – New Zealand – Host: United Arab Emirates
Coming into the final as two-time runners-up, the Kiwis women ensured that it would be a third time lucky as they posted 158 runs riding on Amelia Kerr’s 43-run knock. Kerr returned to haunt the South African women, who had a good start to the chase, with the ball as she claimed a three-wicket-haul to stun the Proteas and send the Kiwis into dreamland with their first taste of the coveted piece of silverware.
