Premier League 2025-26 Match Halted As Discriminatory Abuse From Crowd Reported Towards Lutsharel Geertruida

An alleged discriminatary abuse instance has come to light as the Premier League 2025-26 match between Newcastle United and Sutherland at St. James Park had to be stopped. Sutherland footballer Lutsharel Geertruida was allegedly abused by the crowd, forcing referee to briefly stop the match for three minutes.

It was in the 52nd minute of the match as the match had already been halted due to Newcastle footballer Sven Botman was receiving treatment. It was then that Sutherland captain Granit Xhaka rushed to referee Taylor. The match was stopped for three minutes as Taylor also spoke to both coaching staff before signalling to resume the contest. The Premier League issued a statement on X that said:

“Today’s match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. This is in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.”

Meanwhile, police officials claimed to have made an arrest pre-game after violent clash had erupted.

“We are aware of a number of videos circulating on social media in relation to Newcastle United and Sutherland supporters goading one another. In the main, everyone has co-operated and we are able to report that one arrest was made ahead of kick-off.”

Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon had opened the account for the hosts in the 10th minute of the contest but Sutherland bounced back beautifully in the second half. Chemsdine Talbi netted a goal in the 57th minute, while Brian Brobbey hit the winning one in the 90th minute to put the tourists 2-1 ahead.

Sutherland had also beaten Newcastle United in the away contest.
