After Aravali, now Supreme Court should intervene on NGT issue also

New Delhi. Congress has said that after the order in the case of Aravali Hills, now the Supreme Court should also intervene on the issue of NGT. On Tuesday, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the powers of the NGT have been completely weakened in the last decade. He said that the Supreme Court should intervene so that this institution can work independently in accordance with the law without any fear or favour.
According to media reports, Jairam Ramesh said in a post on This step of the Supreme Court was extremely necessary and welcome. He said that now there are three other very important and urgent issues related to environment, on which the Supreme Court should take suo motu intervention like the Aravali case.
Ramesh said that on August 6, 2025, the Supreme Court had stayed the proposal of the Rajasthan Government and the Central Government to redefine the boundaries of the Sariska Tiger Reserve, under which the way was being made to open about 57 closed mines. This proposal should be clearly rejected. According to Ramesh, on November 18, 2025, the Supreme Court had opened the door to review its own decision of May 16, 2025, in which environmental clearances given with retrospective effect were banned.
He said that such sanctions are against the basic principle of jurisprudence and make a mockery of the governance system. The Congress leader emphasized this. Review of this decision was unnecessary. Retroactive approval should never be given. He says that laws, rules and provisions are often deliberately bypassed to manage the decision-making process once the project starts.
