There is Sri Balkoteshwara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Gowada near Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, which is counted among the Shaiva pilgrimage sites. Lord Shiva is present in the form of Shivalinga in the temple. There are very few such temples in Tamil Nadu, where the Lord is present in the sanctum sanctorum along with his vehicle. It is believed that the Shivalinga present in the temple is self-existent and had given darshan to a devotee in its huge form.

Popular folklore about the temple
According to the popular folk tale about the temple, one day a devotee worshiping Lord Shiva had seen a wonderful light. On going near it, it was found that divine light was emanating from a Shivalinga. God himself came and ordered to build the temple. Initially the temple was established on a small scale, but then the temple was rebuilt in 1947. A glimpse of traditional architecture is visible in the temple. Shri Balkoteshwar Swami Temple is established in village Gowada, which is considered one of the sacred areas of history.

Settled in the 12th century during the Chola dynasty, this village was once ruled by Brahmins and there used to be temples dedicated to both Shiva and Krishna. Devotees believe that just by visiting the temple, Shri Balkoteshwar Swami provides relief from old diseases and family problems. It is said that worshiping in the temple brings mental peace, spiritual strength and fulfillment of desires. On the occasion of Shivratri, a grand event is organized in the temple and rituals are performed in the temple continuously for 10 days. A fair of devotees is organized in the temple for 10 days. The Lord is anointed with holy things like milk, curd, honey and water and the devotees keep vigil throughout the night.
