Temple more than 600 years old
Sri Mukhalingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located in Mukhalingam village near Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. It is also known as Madhukeshwar Temple because the incarnation of Lord Shiva in the temple is called Madhukeshwar. It is said that the temple is more than 600 years old, where Lord Shiva is worshiped with full rituals. Srikakulam has had its own existence from the point of view of spirituality and history. It was once the capital of the Kalinga Empire and being situated on the banks of the river Vanshdhara, Mukhalingam village also has two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Someshwara and Bhimeshwara.

Temple Name Mukhlingeshwar Temple
The Shivalinga installed in Shri Mukhalingeshwar Temple is different. Shivalinga is made of tree trunk, but on seeing it appears to be a structure of stone. Devotees believe that this Shivalinga is self-manifested. Not only this, the shape of Lord Shiva’s face is also carved on the Shivalinga, which is a mixture of his physical and formless forms. The temple was named Mukhlingeshwar because of the face engraved on the Shivalinga.

The architecture of the temple is excellent in Kalinga style.
A stream of water keeps flowing continuously on the Mukhlingeshwar Shivalinga, but the Shivalinga remains the same till today. This is the reason why the devotees’ faith and belief in Mukhlingeshwar Mahadev is so deep. Devotees believe that Mukhlingeshwar Mahadev will not let any calamity befall them. The architecture of the temple also presents an excellent example of Kalinga style. Statues of Lord Shiva, Nandi, Lord Vishnu and other gods and goddesses are carved in the walls of the temple. A big statue of Nandi Maharaj is present in the courtyard of the temple.
