Who will be the new Mayor of Mumbai, how is the selection done?
Mumbai: The results of Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections have come out. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) snatched control of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Uddhav Thackeray with a landslide victory in the 2026 municipal elections.

Now that the results have come out, everyone’s eyes are fixed on when and how Mumbai will get its new mayor. When will the names be declared? Let us know the answers to all these questions.
Political parties select the candidates only after the lottery process for the election of Mayor is completed. The lottery process for electing the mayor is done by the state government. This process will start only after the issuance of notification in this regard. Let us tell you that the results of 29 municipal corporation elections in the state were declared on 16th. In most of these, the parties of the Grand Alliance won.
How is the mayor elected?
Mayors of municipalities are not directly elected by the public. For this a special selection process is adopted. Urban Development Department issues notification to organize lottery for reservation for the post of Mayor. According to which, lottery is organized for the post of mayor in all the municipal corporations. This lottery includes categories like open category, reserved category and women category.
The selection for the post of Mayor is based on the results of lottery. Like Mumbai, the party or alliance which has more than 114 councilors is elected mayor. Whether this post is for open category or reserved category, it becomes clear from the lottery itself. After this, applications are invited for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor and voting takes place in the Municipal Corporation Building, after which the new Mayor is announced.
Lottery process will be done by the end of January
There is speculation that this notification will be issued next week. Some leaders are privately saying that after the notification is issued, the lottery process will take place by the end of January. After this the names for the post of Mayor will be announced. Due to this process, till now no name has come forward from any party for the post of Mayor.
Will Thane mayor be from Shiv Sena?
Eknath Shinde said in his speech that, if there is a mayor from the Grand Alliance in Mumbai, then Shiv Sena has a clear majority in Thane. Therefore, BJP will need Shiv Sena to form government in Mumbai. But since Shiv Sena has a clear majority in Thane, the mayor will be from Shiv Sena. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said this indirectly.
Mayor elections will take a few more days
