Why are auspicious works not done in Kharmas? 90% people are unaware of this story of donkey, it is important for everyone to know
Kharmas is a special time in Hindu calendar. This is the period when the effect of sunrise is considered to be less and hence big events like weapons of normal life i.e. marriage, house warming are postponed. People believe that auspicious works do not yield good results at this time. For this reason, auspicious works are not done in Kharmas. But this version is not only based on belief but its mythology is also available. Human beings have been deciding the beginning or end of any work keeping in mind the time and movement of planets. An old story is also found in the story of Kharmas in which there is description of Sun God and other gods. This period lasts for one month and comes twice a year.
The last segment of Kharmas in 2025 has started from mid-December. According to the astrological calendar, when the Sun enters the Sagittarius sign, Kharmas begins. Similarly, when the Sun enters Pisces, a Kharmas occurs. In this article, we will know about this ongoing Kharmas of 2025, its story and its characteristics in simple language.
From which day Kharmas started in 2025?
The current Kharmas in 2025 will be on 16th December, when Sun God entered Sagittarius. This period will last for about 30 days and will end with Makar Sankranti on 14 January 2026. During these days, all major auspicious works are postponed.
Legend of Kharmas
The story related to Kharmas is found in Markandeya Purana. Khar means donkey in Sanskrit. According to the story, once Suryadev set out to revolve around the universe riding on his chariot of seven horses. During this time, when the horses felt hungry and thirsty, Suryadev sympathized with their pitiful condition and decided to give rest to those horses.
Then he realized that if the chariot stopped then the cycle of creation would be affected. The Sun God’s eyes fell on those two donkeys who were drinking water on the bank of the pond. He thought that by installing these in the chariot, the horses should be given rest for some time, so that the chariot will continue to move and the horses will also take rest. But equality of donkeys and horses is impossible. When donkeys were added to the chariot, the speed of the chariot reduced and the revolution around the earth was completed in one month. According to the story, this delay reduced the brightness of the Sun God. This is the reason why no auspicious work is done in Kharmas.
What should not be done in Kharmas?
At the time of Kharmas, major life events like marriage, housewarming, naming, mundan are not organized. It is believed that at this time the influence of Sun God is less than normal and hence the result of any new beginning cannot remain stable. Doing simple worship, charity and devotional activities during the days of Kharmas is not considered prohibited, rather it is considered auspicious.
Social tradition of Kharmas
In the society, Kharmas is considered a time of rest, restraint and religious meditation. People pay more attention to bhajan, kirtan, charity and service work in this month. The tradition of postponing child marriage, naming etc. has been going on for centuries. This rule is followed by many families even today.
Time calculation and two kharmas
As mentioned, Kharmas comes twice a year. Once when the Sun enters Sagittarius and the second time when the Sun enters Pisces. Both the times, the period of about one month is associated with the name of Kharmas. The reason for this is considered to be the change in the position of the Sun in astrological calculations.
