Donnie Yen’s untitled Caine spin-off gets production update
The untitled John Wick spin-off will begin production next month, which is a major update from the otherwise hushed-up movie, Deadline reported. With filming set to start soon, the movie is likely targeting a release window in 2027 at the earliest.
The story will continue Caine’s journey after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, where the blind assassin is freed from his High Table obligations. His arc left room for further exploration, especially following his reunion with his daughter and the unresolved tension with Akira. The screenplay comes from Mattson Tomlin, whose recent credits include The Batman Part II and the adaptation of BRZRKR. Michael McGrale reportedly co-wrote the script.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson addressed the character’s popularity, saying, “It became clear after John Wick: Chapter 4 that fans were particularly intrigued by Caine, which made his story the most natural next chapter of the franchise.”
Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Caine while also directing the film, bringing his action expertise directly into the project’s creative direction. The actor emphasized that the character’s emotional depth is central to the story. “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero,” Yen said.
Further, he added, “This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story.” Rina Sawayama will also return as Akira.
With production starting soon, the Caine-led John Wick spin-off is positioned as the next major one in the franchise’s legacy.
