According to reports, police spokesman Lawan Adam said the explosion occurred after midnight in Jigawa state when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle on the highway near the university. Residents were removing fuel from an overturned tanker when the explosion occurred, Adam said. After the explosion, a massive fire broke out in the tanker and 94 people died on the spot.

Last month, at least 48 people were killed in an explosion after a fuel tanker collided with another truck in Nigeria's north-central Niger state.

Fatal truck accidents are common on most major roads in Nigeria, and experts believe that most of these accidents are caused by reckless driving, poor road conditions and poorly maintained vehicles.
