Nikhil Advani recalls painful incident after Chandni Chowk to China failure

Mumbai Mumbai. Nikhil Advani directed Chandni Chowk to China, released in 2009, proved to be a flop at the box office. Co-produced by Hollywood's leading production company Warner Bros., the film did not perform well at the box office, despite starring talented actors like Deepika Padukone and Akshay Kumar. In his conversation on Cyrus Says, Nikhil Advani said, “People expected Akshay Kumar to be the next one to make this record and Chandni Chowk was that film for him. But it flopped.” He further said, “This journalist was actually standing outside with his camera crew, pointing towards my building and saying, 'Here lives Nikhil Advani, who has wasted your money. Throw stones at his house.' it was crazy”. Describing the film, Nikhil said, “I knew the film would not do well. There were a lot of problems in the second half. There were too many captains of that ship. Democracy killed the film”.

Chandni Chowk to China tells the story of Sidhu, who is believed to be the reincarnation of a murdered Chinese revolutionary. Sidhu travels to China to save his people, but faces challenges including a deadly female assassin. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Gordon Liu and Ranveer Shorey among others.

Nikhil Advani co-founded the entertainment company Emme Entertainment with his sister Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani. He started his career as an assistant to art-house filmmakers like Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah and Sudhir Mishra. Subsequently, he worked for Dharma Productions, Karan Johar's father, the late Yash Johar, and Yash Raj Films. He also worked as an assistant director for Karan Johar's first two films, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Advani made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy-drama Kal Ho Na Ho, followed by the action comedy Chandni Chowk to China.
