Nimesulide drugs already banned in many European countries
New Delhi 31 December 2025: Ban on nimesulide drugs The Union Health Ministry has banned the well-known pain killer drug ‘Nimesulide’. This restriction applies to nimesulide tablets containing more than 100 mg. The government had announced this ban citing health risks. Nimesulide tablets are completely banned in many European countries.
The Health Ministry has taken this decision after consultation with the Drug Technical Advisory Board. This ban was imposed under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
What did the government say?
According to the Health Ministry, “Consuming more than 100 mg of nimesulide can be dangerous for humans. There are many safe options available in the market to provide relief from pain.”
There was already a ban on tablets for children
Nimesulide is a non-steroidal drug used as a pain reliever. However, the government has expressed concern about its use. In 2011, the Ministry of Health banned the use of nimesulide in children under 12 years of age.
In which countries is Nimesulide banned?
Nimesulide tablets are completely banned in many European countries. Finland, Spain, Ireland and Belgium banned it in 2007. Apart from this, the use of Nimesulide is also banned in Canada, Japan, USA, Australia and UK.
