The troubles of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, the main accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank scam, have once again increased. The London-based High Court has rejected the petition of Nirav Modi, in which he had demanded reopening of his extradition case.
Nirav Modi had appealed to the court to reconsider his case, which the ‘King’s Bench Division’ of the London High Court has rejected the petition in which he had sought to reopen his extradition case. The judges made it clear in their 18-page decision that no ‘exceptional circumstances’ were found to reopen the case.
The British court has considered the written assurances given by the Indian government as “specific and credible”. India has assured that after extradition, Nirav Modi will not be interrogated by the investigating agencies, but he will be directly sent to jail and face trial. Nirav Modi’s legal team had appealed for security and human rights by citing the example of Sanjay Bhandari case (mainly related to money laundering and tax evasion), which the court considered inadequate.

After this decision, the legal process of the investigating agencies to bring Nirav Modi to India is expected to speed up. CBI and ED have been trying to bring him back for a long time. Let us tell you that Nirav Modi is accused of bank fraud and money laundering of about Rs 13,000 crore by making the “black money” earned through illegal activities – like drug trafficking, corruption or fraud – look legitimate or “white”. After this tough stance of the court, now the legal options available to Nirav Modi seem to be almost completely exhausted.
