Nisha Maharana’s Obscene Dance Sparks Chaos in Chhattisgarh

A viral video of Odia opera actress Nisha Maharana performing an obscene dance in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district has triggered major controversy and strict administrative action.

The incident occurred on January 9 at Urmal village under Devbhog police station, where the Banadurga opera troupe from Odisha had permission to perform between January 4 and 10. Consequently, the performance drew sharp criticism after videos spread on social media, showing the dance taking place in the presence of police and local officials.

Following the uproar, the Gariaband Collector ordered the immediate closure of the opera on January 10. Moreover, he transferred Maunpur Sub-Divisional Officer Dr Tulsi Das Markama for allegedly granting permission without proper clearance and personally attending the show.

In addition, the Collector formed a four-member team to investigate the incident and submit a detailed report. Meanwhile, Devbhog police arrested 14 organisers linked to the opera. Authorities also suspended three police personnel accused of enjoying the performance instead of enforcing discipline.

Officials stressed that further action will follow once the inquiry report is submitted. The administration underscored its commitment to maintaining cultural dignity and preventing such violations in future events.
