Focusing on this critical issue, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari made an important statement in the Lok Sabha. He announced the “Rahveer” scheme to encourage those who help accident victims. The scheme not only focuses on saving lives but also strengthens the spirit of helping others in the society.

The terrible truth of road accidents

According to Nitin Gadkari, there are approximately 5 lakh road accidents in India every year, killing 1.5 to 1.8 lakh people. Alarmingly, 66 percent of these deaths occur among young adults between the ages of 18 and 34. A report by the Delhi-based AIIMS suggests that an estimated 50,000 lives could be saved every year if victims receive timely medical help after an accident. This highlights how important the first few minutes after an accident are.

Why do people hesitate to help?

It is often observed that after a road accident, people who witness the incident hesitate to help. The biggest reason for this is the fear of police investigation, legal trouble and court proceedings. Nitin Gadkari appealed to allay this fear and made it clear that the government ensures that those who help do not face any difficulties. This philosophy is the foundation of Rahveer Yojana.

Encourage those who help

Under the government’s new scheme ‘Rahveer’, a citizen who helps save the life of a person injured in a road accident by immediately transporting him to a hospital or trauma center will be given a cash reward of Rs 25,000, a special title of ‘Rahveer’ and a government citation (certificate).

Earlier, a prize of Rs 5,000 was given under this scheme. But in 2025, this amount has been increased to Rs 25,000. A person can avail this award maximum 5 times in a year.

Apart from this, the government has also given relief to hospitals to ensure that there is no delay in treatment. A provision has been made that the expenses of the first 7 days of treatment of the accident victim will be immediately reimbursed to the hospitals.
